A Lenten Journey to Rediscover Jesus

For many years now during Lent our parish has had a program to help the congregation grow in faith and in communion. Separating into individual groups those participating in the “small Lenten faith groups” then studied the same book or bible study as the other small groups. It has been a way to foster faith and community within our church throughout the 40 days of Lent. What’s more is that many of these small faith groups continue to meet throughout the rest of the year to study together and to draw closer in friendship and in fath.

Last year our parish undertook Matthew Kelly’s invitation to “Rediscover Jesus”. The book is broken down into 40 chapters, one for each day of Lent. The groups would read the {very short- seriously, they are really short!} chapters for the week and then come together once a week to discuss the book, the questions, and their faith. It was a fantastic way to grow in holiness during Lent and those who participated said that it was also a wonderful way to meet new people, develop lasting friendships, and just feel like they were a part of “something bigger”.

While I still plan to take part in my small Lenten group for church again this year, I also plan to reread Matthew Kelly’s awesome book and then blog about it throughout Lent. I will follow a very particular format that will allow for me to share my thoughts but also to hear from you as well so that I can grow in faith through your wisdom.

Starting March 1, Ash Wednesday, I will begin with the first chapter: New Beginnings. I would love for you to join me in this Lenten study! Even if you don’t ever comment with your thoughts, I promise that simply reading with me each day and thinking about the bible verses and the questions that Matthew poses will help you grow in your Christian faith.

If you would like to join me, you will need Matthew Kelly’s book Rediscover Jesus: An Invitation. You can find it here and here. I would also suggest a notebook if you don’t like writing in the margins of your book and of course a bible so that you can look up the passages that Matthew introduces in “Verses to Live”.

As we begin each day I will pick out sentences or phrases that I feel God wants me to focus on. What I find speaks to me may not be what speaks to you and that’s ok! This is where we will learn from one another. I will also write about how I feel I can live out the suggested bible verse as well as answer the “Question to Consider”. You can share as much or as little as you wish {if you choose to share at all}.

I urge you to prayerfully consider studying with me this Lenten season. If you feel God placing this calling on your heart and if you would like to experience Jesus in a more intimate way, I hope that you will answer His call and will join me on this path to Rediscover Jesus.

I would love to hear from you! If you are planning to join me, leave a comment!
